CS2 Stretched Resolution: 4:3 vs 16:9 (2026)

Settings · Updated · 2 min read

Many CS2 pros still play in 4:3 stretched, usually 1280×960, a habit inherited from CS 1.6 and CS:GO. It is not magic: you gain wider-looking models and lose part of your field of view. This guide explains exactly what changes, so you can decide for yourself.

What stretched 4:3 actually changes

16:9 native (1920×1080)4:3 stretched (1280×960)
Field of viewWidest: you see more on the sidesNarrower: the sides of the screen are cut
Player modelsNormal widthLook wider, easier to hit for some players
Image sharpnessSharpestSofter, stretched pixels
Mouse feelSame speed in all directionsHorizontal movement feels faster
FPSLowerA little higher (fewer pixels to render)

Stretching does not make the hitboxes bigger: the models only look wider because the image is stretched. Whether that helps is a matter of personal feel.

What resolution do CS2 pros use?

Every CS2 crosshair code stores the screen height the crosshair was made for. On ClutchCrosshair, most pro crosshairs are made for a 960 px screen height, the height of 1280×960, which suggests that 4:3 stretched is still the most popular choice at the top level. You can see each pro's value on their crosshair page.

How to play CS2 in 4:3 stretched

  1. In CS2, open Settings › Video › Video. Set Aspect Ratio to Normal 4:3 and Resolution to 1280×960 (or 1024×768, 1440×1080).
  2. Set Display Mode to Fullscreen.
  3. NVIDIA: open the NVIDIA Control Panel › Adjust desktop size and position, choose Full-screen scaling and Perform scaling on: GPU, then tick Override the scaling mode set by games and programs.
  4. AMD: open AMD Software › Settings › Display, enable GPU Scaling and set Scaling Mode to Full Panel.
  5. Restart CS2. If you see black bars on the sides, the scaling setting of your graphics card is not applied yet.

Your crosshair and sensitivity in stretched

In stretched, everything on screen is wider, including your crosshair: horizontal lines look longer and vertical lines thicker. Pick your resolution under the preview of our crosshair generator to see exactly how a crosshair looks in 4:3 stretched before using it.

Your mouse also feels faster horizontally. Most players simply get used to it. Some lower m_yaw to compensate; for 1280×960 on a 16:9 monitor, the math gives about 0.0165 instead of 0.022, but it is a matter of taste.

CS2 Stretched Resolution FAQ

Is 4:3 stretched better in CS2?

Not objectively. Models look wider and FPS is slightly higher, but you see less on the sides and the image is less sharp. Try both for a few days and keep what feels best.

What is the most common CS2 pro resolution?

1280×960 stretched is still very common among pros: most pro crosshair codes on ClutchCrosshair are made for a 960 px screen height.

Why do I have black bars in 4:3?

Your graphics card is not set to stretch the image. Set Full-screen scaling performed by the GPU in the NVIDIA Control Panel, or GPU Scaling with Full Panel in AMD Software.

Does stretched make hitboxes bigger in CS2?

No. Hitboxes stay the same; the models only look wider because the image is stretched horizontally.
